Different Treatment Options For Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a skin condition that is mainly characterized by the loss of pigment in different areas of the skin. It appears to occur when the body's immune cells destroy the cells that produce melanocytes which are responsible in producing the brown pigment of the skin. The main cause of this peculiar skin disease is still unknown, but most experts say that it is because of an autoimmune problem. Vitiligo is an non contagious condition, but it is chronic and once you have it, there's no way to permanently get rid of it. Vitiligo is a serious disease as it can affect a persons physical and emotional life. There is no permanent cure for vitiligo yet, but there are existing treatments that aim to increase the pigment of the affected skin. Let me share to you some of them.

1. Topical Therapy
Several topical agents are available to treat localized vitiligo. Topical therapies usually include the use of corticosteroid creams, immunosuppressant creams and topical drugs such as methoxsalen.

2. Phototherapy
As the name of the treatment suggests, phototherapy is a medical procedure in which the skin is exposed to UV light. It may be given alone or after taking a drug that makes the skin sensitive to light. Experts say that phototherapy induces repigmentation up to seventy percent with localized vitiligo.

3. Excimer Laser Therapy
Excimer laser therapy is another innovation which aims to depigment patches of vitiligo. It is a fairly new treatment but it is tested to be safe and effective when limited to less than thirty percent of the body surface.

4. Skin Grafting
Skin may be moved, from areas which are normally pigmented and placed onto areas where there is pigment loss. This treatment is only applicable for mild cases of vitiligo though.

5. Depigmentation Therapy
Depigmentation therapy is one option to make the skin look even. Commonly used in exteme cases, this treatment uses a topical medication such as monobezone which can help remove all the pigment of the skin resulting in more even appearance. The only downside to this treatment is that it leaves the patient more at risk to sunburns and melanomas. It is a permanent change and is usually used as a last option.

6. Use of Cosmetics
Cosmetics such as foundations and concealers can be used to help conceal white patches on the skin. Because vitiligo is noticeable and can be quite embarrassing, cosmetics are great tools for patients to conceal the loss of pigment on their skin and create eveness of color.
In search of vitiligo treatments that can effectively repigment your skin? XTRAC Therapy is an FDA approved vitiligo therapy which can help improve your skin, reduce your diseased areas, and ultimately improve your quality of life.
